Dry eyes causing blurriness?
So a little over a week ago I accidentally slept with my contacts in. I woke up and realized that my right eye was blurry.So I made an appointment and of course the dr told me I had an infection. I was to use eye drops every hour for 48 hours and antibiotic ointment 2x a day. Well, it has been a week since that appointment and my right eye is still blurry. I went back to the dr today and now he said that I have “potholes” covering both eyes (last time it was only in my right eye) and he thinks that my contacts exacerbated a dry condition. And since the drops didn’t work he wants me to get plugs in both eyes to help with the condition. (I am pregnant and can’t use restasis) Has anyone heard of this? I have to wait a month and he said the blurriness won’t go away until the “potholes” clear up and that won’t happen until I have plugs put in. Now I am worried I am going to have blurriness in both eyes!
The “potholes” are probably pits in the surface of the cornea caused by a bacterial infection. They can become serious corneal ulcers if not treated. Ulcers can be extremely painful and can lead to permanent loss of vision.
Contact lens wearers are at a high risk of developing ulcers if their lenses are not properly cleaned and disinfected. The plugs are small silicone plugs that are placed in the area where the tears drain. They cause more tears to remain on the eye. The drug restasis, which you cannot use, enables the eyes to produce more tears.
Once the infection is cleared the pitting can take a long time to heal. When the pits are healed the blurriness should clear. Yes, you could get blurriness in both eyes. I once had a pitted cornea myself. Apparently it was a dry eye condition that made me susceptible.
