Lazy Eye Medical

Is there a medical procedure to fix a lazy eye? I mean a REALLY lazy eye!
My buddy has one and it greaty affects his self esteem and confidence, not to mention his social life. Is there some sort of lazer eye surgery or something for his eyeball?
He is fortunate that he has a good buddy such as you to be so understanding and concerned. I dont know how old your buddy is but in any event “Lazy eye” can be corrected by surgery. More rarely it can be caused by cranial nerve problems. If it is “Lazy eye” and the surgery had been done while he was a baby, younger than 15 months, chances are his vision would be normal now and the eye would remain straight. Because he is older the eye-brain connection (part of the learning process for proper vision, not the physical connection) was never completed. While his eye can be straightened by surgery it is strictly for cosmetic purposes. (which may be reason enough) It will not improve vision in that eye. To complete the procedure both eyes must be operated on. Not the eye itself, but the muscles surrounding the eye that control movement. Note that with normal eyes, both involuntarily move together. Which is why surgery would have to be done on both sides. Unfortunately it is not a permenant cure and the surgery may have to be repeated several years later. He should consult with a good Ophthamologist. (eye surgeon) for more specific answers to his particular condition. I understand his lack of self esteen and confidence. Depending on the eye surgeon’s diagnosis and if it is medically advisable, it may be in his best interests to have it done as soon as possible if only for those reasons.
