After 6 answers and not a single accurate description of pink eye. As noted above, pink eye is also known as conjunctivitis which is an inflammation of the conjunctiva. Remember, I said inflammation not infection. There are many reasons why conjunctivitis occurs some of which are catagious and others reason not contagious.

First, pink eye have alot of different causes. It can be caused by allergies, foreign object in the eye, viruses, and bacteria. Obvious, allergies and foreign particles are not contagious whereas virus and bacteria can be contagious. Common bacteria that causes pink eye are staph, gonorrhea, and chlamydia (YES STD).

So to answer your question, bacteria conjunctivitis is not airbourne but viruses can be airbourne. I mean think about it. If you have a viral cold and you cough and sneeze, that virus is aerosolized into the air and YES it can be airbourne and you can contract it.
