When Is Pink Eye Contagious

when is pink eye contagious
Is “pink eye” always from a bacteria or can it also arise from a virus?

My son has a cold virus and 5 days into it, he got “pink eye” or conjunctivitus. The urgent care Doctor said it is highly contagious and that it comes from a bacteria.

Three days ago I came down with the same cold virus and this morning I have pink eye too. We do very good hand washing (in 20 years of kids having strep, we have never had it spread to another family member–we think from good hand washing).

We wash well, often and don’t share towels and use paper towels when someone is ill. Could this from a virus or is it always a bacteria?

Conjunctivitis, commonly know as “pink eye”, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the tissue that lines the inside of the eyelid. It can be caused by allergies, bacteria or viruses. It can be hard to tell whether the infection is caused by a virus or bacteria. In general, the discharge associated with viral conjunctivitis is watery, whereas it will be thicker and more pus-like when the infection is caused by bacteria.
